The Ohio State University,
DVM in 1983
Dr.
Jerry Wenger is the ninth in a family of eleven children. He
grew up on a 160-acre dairy farm in Dalton, Ohio. From
observing his parents and older siblings, he knew that he wanted to
be involved in either medicine or farming when he grew up.
Among his siblings are two physicians, three nurses, a dairy farmer,
and another veterinarian. By becoming a farm-animal
veterinarian, Dr. Wenger was able to combine both of his career
interests.
He decided to apply to veterinary school once; if not accepted,
he would take over the family dairy farm. Dr. Wenger was
accepted and went on to graduate from The Ohio State University
School of Veterinary Medicine in 1983. His brother, who
graduated from OSU two years earlier, was in practice at Orville
Veterinary Clinic in Orrville, Ohio. There was not enough work
for the two Wengers in Orville at that time, so Dr. Wenger moved to
Pennsylvania to work for Dr. J. Harold Landis at Smoketown
Veterinary Hospital.
Being a single man at the time, Dr. Wenger thought he would
practice for a year or two in PA. Then, leaving his rookie
mistakes in the Keystone State, he would return home to Ohio to join
his brother in practice. In the meantime, however, he met his
future wife, Denise. He got married, had four children (Clark,
Louis, Emily, and Sally), bought a small farm, and forgot all about
that job in Ohio!
Dr. Wenger likes making farm calls, especially in nice weather.
He considers it a real privilege to visit Lancaster County's
beautifully scenic farms for a living. He enjoys providing
medical and surgical care to cattle and horses, and divides his time
equally between farm calls and surgeries at the clinic. When
not at work, he may be doing a little farming of his own or spending
a few hours on the golf course. He and his wife attend
Neffsville Mennonite Church.
