Equine Gastric Ulcers
by Dr. Ellis
We
are pleased to announce the aquisition of a new veterinary
endoscope. Our previous endoscope only allowed examination of
the upper respiratory tract; the new one is long enough to reach the
stomach. Over the past several years, research has shown that
equine stomach ulcers are a major cause of reduced weight, decreased
performance, erratic behavior, colic, and ill-thrift. The
causes of gastric ulcers are numerous but usually have their root in
stressful situations or surroundings. Competition, new herd
mates, foaling, traveling, and changing routines are some of the
many causes. An upper GI endoscopic exam is the only way to
diagnose the presence of gastric ulcers. Typical treatment
involves medication and/or altered management practices.
